The devil's got me in his grip
eyes so wide no one can deceive him
the devil's got me in his grip
teeth so sharp like a hundred needles
he found me on this sinking ship
on my knees praying for a way out
you've heard this story haven't you?
how will it end, and are the stories all true?
Dig deep, dig deep there is trouble in the company i keep
my feet, my feet, they won't carry me home, the rivers too deep.
If I could I'd go on a trip
to the sea
swim the finest waters
but the devil won't let go of me
and what's more he's sworn to take my daughter
I'm meek, too meek
to commandeer the solace I seek
don't weep
don't weep
can we threaten the cage if we know that we're free?
On his way to work one day a man got swallowed up
never had he stopped to see the flowers growing up
through a gash that opened up the ground swallowed him whole
he thought about his family he thought about his soul
he found himself inside a cage with others looking on
he didn't say a word for days his happiness was gone
his happiness was gone
Then someone came near to him with horns upon his head
i will relate this story to you tell you what he said
tell you what he said
Did you see me I waved hello
You look like somebody I used to know
I can tell that you feel out of place
On the outskirts of the human race
And it was never my plan to hold you hear
We don't deal in currency we deal in fear
call me names it won't do you no good
You're being charged with living a life of wood
No one ever told this man that he had not done right
He never got in trouble, never got into a fight
But now that he had found himself inside the gates of hell
He tried to genuflect but what his sin was they would not tell
One day in a fit of rage the devil glared at him
"You bastards get a sea of chance" he said "but you won't swim
I'll send you back if you will take this message home with you
Figure out what it is that you're supposed to do, figure out who.
Step right up and turn it around
There is something for everyone in this town
I was lost got buried deep underground
Found a tunnel and I followed the sound.
I pushed this boulder up that hill
But it won't go up the other side
I see the image burning still
The smoke tells me that all that's real has died
Dig deep, dig deep there is trouble in the company i keep
my feet, my feet, they won't carry me home, the rivers too deep.
I'm meek, too meek
to commandeer the solace I seek
don't weep
don't weep
can we threaten the cage if we know that we're free?
